Behind the designs of our Spring Collection

02 Aug, 2022

Refresh, renew and relax

We’re looking forward to spring and the simple pleasures of fresh greens in the garden, fragrant blooms and lighter evenings to enjoy with family and friends. Our new collection is designed for relaxed living and entertaining with bedding and homeware in hand-painted botanical designs, beautiful hues and soft, dreamy textures.

Our talented in-house design team create beautiful and unique pieces for every Wallace Cotton collection. Working together they design, hand paint and deliver exquisite patterns which are transformed into bed linen, homeware and sleepwear for you to enjoy, love and gift. Read on to see how a few of their beautiful designs came to life for spring.

Kowhai Garden

With intricate kowhai flowers, dreamy foliage and dragonflies in gentle blue hues, new Kowhai Garden bedding is a beautiful design made from sustainable organic cotton. Kowhai Garden is available in a duvet cover set, oxford and European pillowcases and matching cushion covers.

The delicate hand-painted pattern of our Kowhai Garden collection was created by our design team. Discover the inspiration behind the design and how this beautiful print was made.

The intricate design of our Kowhai Garden collection was inspired by a piece of vintage Parisian toile fabric bought at the Paris flea market. To reinvent this traditional toile as a native interpretation, kowhai flowers, dragonflies and a selection of New Zealand foliage were hand painted in shades of blue water colour.

Our clever textile designers worked carefully with the paintings to create a beautiful repeat and layout, which brought the design to life.

Finally, our Kowhai Garden pattern was printed on organic cotton to create a fresh and delicate new design for Wallace Cotton.

Passion Flower

Celebrating the beauty of nature, new Passion Flower bedding features a floral and intertwined botanical design in muted hues. Passion Flower bed linen is made from sustainable certified organic cotton and is available in a duvet cover set, oxford and European pillowcases.

Our textile designers hand painted the beautiful design of our Passion Flower bedding. They shared their inspiration and the process for creating this stunning design with us.

We love looking through old plates of botanical illustrations. The detailed way that flower and leaf shapes have been documented is such a great source of inspiration, and these formed the starting point for our ‘Passion Flower’ design. We chose water colours to hand paint the design with. Working in water colour paints allows the colour and details of each plant to be built up slowly for beautiful depth. For this design, ginger and passion flowers were chosen for the unique shapes of these flowers. The way that the passionfruit plant sprawls and intertwines inspired the organic flowing layout of this design.

Juniper Kitchen

Created in the style of traditional woodblock prints, our Juniper Kitchen collection features a small floral repeat and larger scale botanical pattern in muted mustards and soft greens. The tea towel set includes a refreshing Juniper Berry Gin Fizz recipe to start your spring entertaining in style.

We asked our team about the inspiration behind the Juniper collection and how they created the artwork for these beautiful pieces.

Traditional Indian block printing is such an anchor in textile design. For this range, a linocut printmaking technique was used to create the floral shapes and to emulate how an Indian woodblock print would look. Starting with the larger scale botanical pattern, our team then identified elements to use for the simple floral repeat. The berries in the design inspired the Juniper Berry Gin Fizz recipe – because who doesn’t like a yummy gin recipe….
