World Cotton Day

World Cotton Day 7 October 2024

Cotton is at the heart of everything we do at Wallace Cotton, it’s even in our name! Choosing natural, quality fabrics to make bed linen, home essentials and sleepwear from has been important to us from the very beginning. We’re recognising World Cotton Day by sharing what it means to us and millions of others around the world. Read on to discover our sustainability story and learn more about our favourite ‘feel good’ fabric, organic cotton.

Weaving a better future for cotton

Cotton is one of the most common fabrics in our wardrobes and on our beds. It is comfortable, breathable and durable. Cotton as a crop is a life-changing product that sustains 32 million growers worldwide (almost half of them women) and benefits over 100 million families across 80 countries in 5 continents.

World Cotton Day is supported by the United Nations as an opportunity to encourage sustainable trade policies to help developing countries that produce cotton, to benefit more from every step of the cotton supply chain. The theme for this year’s official UN Cotton Day is “Making cotton fair and sustainable for all: from farm to fashion”. The United Nations is hoping to raise visibility of cotton including the critical role that it plays in sustainable economic growth, international trade and poverty alleviation, highlighting the importance of employment and decent work for all.

Cotton suppliers and certifications

We believe in using the finest natural fabrics from renewable sources. Where possible, we choose organic cotton for our bed linen and sleepwear collections. Organic cotton is produced free from pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and genetic modification, which minimises the impact on the environment. This also contributes to a safer environment for the people who work with cotton crops, the local wildlife and their ecosystems.

We work with carefully selected cotton suppliers who carry the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). These organisations oversee the production process to ensure a more transparent and accountable supply chain. And this means we are working with suppliers whose ethical and sustainable principles align with our own.
