At Wallace Cotton, we love white.

White textures on a bed create the most relaxing and welcoming feeling of coming home. Simple yet luxurious, layering a bed with soft sateen or linen bed linen, along with a textured waffle blanket or hand-stitched quilt can create an oasis of calm, as well as a tactile feast.

Why white bedding is best!

“I love the aesthetic of white in the bedroom,” says Paula Wallace. “The simple pleasure of clean white bedding is calming and restorative.”

In nature, there are so many shades of white, from cool clouds, fresh milk, eggshells, sun on the ocean, fresh snowfall, surf foam... and all of these instances of white in the natural world have the ability to calm and relax the mind. Ultimately, that’s the feeling you want to create in your bedroom!

Not only that, adding white can create a soft pause in pattern and colour in any textile design and allows the design to coordinate beautifully with other white elements. When used as a base colour, white can make multi-colour stripes magically appear more contemporary and elegant.

Finally, there is good reason for using white bedding in lodges and hotels besides looking beautiful and clean. The truth is, white doesn’t fade over time, and is easy to clean at all temperatures. (Check out our handy guide for proven tips and tricks to caring for your white sheets below.)

Pile your bed with snowy white linen for a relaxing beautiful bed to sink into at the end of the day.

Caring for your white sheets

If you want white bedding but are unsure how to keep them pristine, you might find yourself thinking, “How do I keep my bed sheets white?” Contrary to popular belief, white bedlinen is actually much easier to care for than colours because there are more laundering options to keep them looking beautiful.

Here are some tips for keeping your whites white:

  • Remove your make-up before bed every night! Your sheets and your skin will thank you for it.
  • Address spills and stains immediately … use a sponge or wet cloth and spot treat it immediately. For a larger stain, strip the bed and flush the mark with cold running water asap.
  • Use a formulated detergent and/or a whitening booster in the laundry. There are plenty available so try them all until you find one that works for you and your family.
  • Chlorine bleach has a chemical reaction that can make stains appear more yellow. Instead, opt for a natural alternative by soaking sheets with mixture of warm water, white vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. Alternatively, try adding half a cup of baking soda with your detergent at the beginning of the wash cycle. Then, at the start of the rinse cycle, pour in half a cup of white vinegar (the smell will rinse out).

And for the pet lovers, no matter what our furry friends do during the day, you can keep pet paws off your white bedlinen by laying a darker tone bedcover or quilt over the bed during the day - or keep the bedroom doors closed to protect your whites.
