A handy hint for caring for your tea-towels before you use them, soak them in a tub/bucket of cold water for a minimum of 24 hours, this swells the cotton fibres and increases absorbency, then throw them in the washing machine with a tablespoon of detergent (because they are not dirty). Once this is completed put them in the dryer on a reduced spin to get rid of any excess lint.
Your teatowels will come up absolutely beautiful, they will be rich and creamy and super absorbent.
Do the same with your bath towels for the same results.
